Expressionism

Expressionism is less a style than a 'trend'; it represents how one particular young generation 'expressed' its feelings for life. In the early 1920s, the Expressionist artists - especially in Germany, but also in other European countries - sought to give expression to elemental experiences in an entirely new way. Max Pechstein said the driving force behind Expressionism was the desire to shock and provoke: the rebellion of youth against an ingrained outlook. Today, Expressionism is regarded as one of the central movements of the 20th century.
