THE ARTISTS
Ian Chamberlain Paul du Moulin Tanya Kingston Sophie Seeger

Ian has ben involved in the arts for over 30 years. He works across media: design, painting, sculpture, photography, music, digital media and his work explores space and colour, sound and form, Ian believes the work itself dictates the medium. His series in this exhibition forms a personal allegory for the artist’s life in the Blue Mountains. With it, he uses a wide range of media including photography, sandstone, silver, gold leaf, copper, acrylic and wood.

Ian has formally studied art, graphic design, digital media, multimedia and, with the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, jazz. He has exhibitied his works in London, as well as thoughout the Blue Mountains, Cowra, Bondi, North Sydney, Balmain and Sydney. He is a member of the National Association for the Visual Arts, Founding Member of the Society of Advertising, Commercial and Magazine Photographers, and a Founding Member of the Australian Graphic Designers Association.

Paul's art has been described as "incredibly varied, from subtle landscapes, fine etchings, haunting portraits; to surreal urbanscapes". Much of Paul's work can be viewed as a series of cultural artifacts, created as a result of a particular sensitivity to the subtle shifts constantly occurring in both the natural and man-made world. With training and a background in drawing, water colouring, oil painting, sculpture, new media and printmaking it is not only his subject matter, style and technique which varies, but also the medium in which he works.

Paul has had residencies in China and the Czech Republic and has won numerous awards over the years; the most recent being the Crockett Prize for contemporary works in 2007. He has exhibited through Australia as well as in China, Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic. His works are held in private collections in Australia, Hong Kong, UK, Canada, USA and France. Recently Paul has taken over curatorial responsibilities with the Blue Mountains Artists Company.

Tanya Kingston's fine art practice has largely consisted of large scale oil paintings and bronze sculptures, although she also draws, illustrates and writes. Expansive in nature, her painting has developed around the study of the figure in space, both physical and psychological space.

Tanya was resident artist at the NSW University Atelier of the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris in 1997. She has exhibited in Paris, Belgium and the USA, as well as Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. She holds a Master of Art Degree and a Masters' Research Degree (MFA) from the Sydney College of Fine Arts and was awarded a fellowship grant to the Vermont Studio Centre, USA as an artist in residence, which allowed her work to explore spatial abstraction, with the figure as 'vector'.

Tanya now lives and works in Sydney and Katoomba. She has works with the Sara Roney Gallery in Paddington and recently had a solo show in Leura at the Artresolve Gallery in April 2008.

Sophie's works are truly expressionistic from barely-there landscapes, to pure abstract works. Each line, painted, drawn or scratched out, spontaneously creates the composition; with an element of intuition that leads. Often the works change direction in her quest for that balance of line, tone and colour.

Using washes in some works combined with bridging and layering as well as large areas of flat colour to create ambiguity, Sophie sees placement of colour as important for visual shifting and also to create that element of surprise or incongruity. Possibly because she was born in South Africa and has now lived in Australia for 20 years, Sophie has a passion for where the sky meets the horizon line and this is apparent in her more figurative works.

Sophie has exhibited in Melbourne, Sydney, Singapore and The Blue Mountains. She has works in private collections in Australia, Denmark, South Africa, Singapore and the US; and has a large commission base.
